Andrew Tate Loses Appeal In Romania Over Extended Detention – A Romanian appeals court has maintained a decision made last month to extend Andrew Tate’s detention, meaning the former kickboxer, influencer, and self-proclaimed misogynist will stay in detention until at least February 27. Tate, 36, his brother Tristan, 34, and two Romanian female suspects, one of whom was a former police officer, were detained in December on suspicion of human trafficking, rape, and organizing a criminal organization to abuse women. They have all denied any wrongdoing.
A judge extended their detention until the end of February last month, citing “the capacity of the defendants to exercise permanent psychological control over their victims, including by resorting to constant acts of violence.” After a brief hearing in which the Tate brothers came handcuffed together in a police van, Andrew declared his innocence to waiting reporters, the Bucharest court of appeal upheld that verdict on Wednesday. Neither has been charged at the moment.
Tina Glandian, the brothers’ US legal counsel, who has also represented boxer Mike Tyson and singer Chris Brown said that the brothers’ detention without trial for more than 30 days violated their international human rights. Tate, a dual US-British citizen, was thrown off the UK version of Big Brother in 2016 and became notorious for his misogynistic remarks and hate speech. He has said women are partially responsible for being raped and that they “belong” to men.
He was finally removed from all major sites after amassing millions of followers on social media, raising concerns that his videos were radicalizing young men. Following Elon Musk’s takeover of the company in November, he was restored on Twitter, where his account has 4.7 million followers. Prosecutors started looking into the brothers in March when one of them reportedly raped a trafficked woman. The brothers are accused of enticing their victims and fraudulently pretending to want a romantic relationship in order to seduce them.
The victims were then allegedly taken to properties outside Bucharest where they were forced “through physical violence, mental intimidation and coercion” to produce pornographic content for social media sites, generating large profits. So far, the prosecution has identified six victims, including kids. Georgiana Naghel and Alexandra Luana Radu, two Romanian women in detention, are suspected of acting as the brothers’ accomplices.
