Apple Will Face Class-Action Lawsuit Over AirTag Safety – Apple’s attempt to have a lawsuit regarding its AirTags dismissed was unsuccessful on Friday, leading the company to confront a class action lawsuit accusing the devices of aiding stalkers in tracking their victims. US District Judge Vince Chhabria in San Francisco ruled that the plaintiffs had adequately substantiated their allegations of negligence and product liability against Apple.
However, he did dismiss some other claims put forth by the plaintiffs. Allegations in the lawsuit suggest that Apple was aware of the potential risks associated with AirTags and should be held accountable for their misuse. The plaintiffs argue that they were targeted using AirTags and attribute their injuries to flaws in the device’s safety features.

They assert that, priced at $29, AirTags have become a favored tool for stalkers and abusers. Apple contends that it bears no responsibility for the manner in which AirTags are utilized. Nonetheless, the company has introduced a feature that alerts users when an AirTag may be monitoring their location.
In iOS 15.4 the company also added an alert when a user is setting up an AirTag for the first time that explains that AirTags are meant to track personal property and that “using an AirTag to track people without consent is a crime in many regions of the world.” Besides being employed for tracking individuals,
AirTags have also found utility among car thieves for tailing potential targets. Conversely, Washington D.C. has distributed these devices to certain residents as a means to expedite the retrieval of stolen vehicles. Additionally, AirTags have proven effective on multiple occasions in locating stolen luggage.
