The trial, held in the Ontario Superior Court, involved five sexual assault charges and one count of forcible confinement, all stemming from alleged incidents spanning the 1980s to the mid-2000s. Every purported “tour” concluded in his bedroom suite, equipped with a bed, televisions, and a jacuzzi. Prosecutors highlighted that the doors lacked handles, and Nygard had control over the locks. In late 2020, Canadian authorities arrested Nygard at the request of the US, alleging that since 1995, he had utilized his businesses to entice women and girls in the US, Canada, and the Bahamas for sexual gratification for himself and associates.

Toronto police filed additional charges approximately a year later. Nygard is also confronted with sexual assault and forcible confinement charges in Manitoba and Quebec. He is currently resisting extradition to the US, where he faces multiple charges in New York, including conspiracy to commit racketeering, transportation of a minor for the purpose of prostitution, and sex trafficking through force, fraud, or coercion, as reported by CBC News.

Originally from Finland, Nygard was raised in Manitoba, eventually overseeing his eponymous clothing enterprises and ascending to become one of Canada’s wealthiest individuals. As he faces extradition to the US, where he confronts serious accusations, Nygard’s legal battles highlight a significant chapter in the ongoing pursuit of justice for the alleged victims. The case also underscores the complexity of addressing transnational allegations involving a prominent figure in the fashion industry.
