Rapper Tory Lanez to be Sentenced for Shooting Singer Megan Thee Stallion

Rapper Tory Lanez to be Sentenced for Shooting Singer Megan Thee Stallion – On Monday, musician Tory Lanez, also known as Daystar Peterson, will receive his sentencing for the 2020 shooting incident involving fellow artist Megan Thee Stallion. He was convicted in December 2022 of three felonies related to the shooting, which resulted in Megan Thee Stallion being wounded with bullet fragments in her feet.

Prosecutors are seeking a 13-year prison sentence for Lanez due to the offense, alongside what they refer to as a subsequent “campaign of misinformation” carried out through hip-hop blogs and music to damage Megan Thee Stallion’s credibility. On the other hand, Lanez’s defense team is requesting probation and enrollment in a residential drug treatment program to address his alcoholism, which they believe developed as a response to childhood trauma.

The upcoming sentencing will mark the conclusion of a divisive three-year story that unfolded in court, on the artists’ social media, and in hip-hop gossip blogs. According to prosecutors, the incident began on July 12, 2020, at Kylie Jenner’s mansion in the Hollywood Hills, where Megan Thee Stallion (Megan Pete) and Lanez (Daystar Peterson) attended a small pool party. Later, during a drive with Megan Thee Stallion, Lanez, Kelsey Harris, and Lanez’s security guard, an argument ensued, leading Megan Thee Stallion to exit the vehicle.

It was at that moment, prosecutors said, Lanez fired a handgun toward the ground in her direction. During the trial, Lanez’s defense attorney, George Mgdesyan, contended that it was Harris who shot Megan Thee Stallion, revealing their romantic involvement as a possible motive. The incident generated extensive media coverage and speculation, with Megan Thee Stallion publicly stating on Instagram Live on August 20, 2020, that Lanez was the one who shot her.

Lanez has consistently asserted his innocence, alleging that Megan Thee Stallion lied about the shooting incident and suggesting that her Roc Nation management team was attempting to set him up. Megan Thee Stallion has strongly denied any romantic involvement with Lanez, even addressing the matter during a high-profile interview with Gayle King. However, she did testify that they had a level of intimacy stemming from their shared experiences of losing their mothers.

During the trial, Megan Thee Stallion told the jury that she lied at first out of embarrassment and that she was disgusted to have “shared her body with someone who would shoot her.” After one day of deliberation, the jury found the 30-year-old Canadian rapper guilty of assault with a semiautomatic firearm, possession of a loaded, unregistered firearm in a vehicle, and discharging a firearm with gross negligence. Despite the conviction and ongoing appeals, Lanez remains steadfast in his claims of innocence, with his attorneys attributing his actions to alcohol abuse disorder.
