YouTuber MrBeast Sponsors Cataract Surgeries to Help 1000 Visually Impaired People See Again – MrBeast, a 24-year-old popular YouTuber with the fourth-most subscribed channel, has released a video showcasing his sponsorship of 1,000 cataract surgeries to restore vision. He is recognized for his charitable acts and in the video, he collaborates with medical professionals to assist individuals globally suffering from treatable blindness.
In the video, ophthalmologist Jeff Levenson emphasizes that half of blind individuals can regain their sight with a 10-minute surgery. “If you’re wondering how the surgery allows people to see again, it’s because the lens in their eyes got so cloudy that they can’t see through it,” MrBeast, real name Jimmy Donaldson, explained. “So the surgeon uses a tiny vacuum to suck up the clouded lens, and replace it with an artificial one. This surgery is that simple, they can see again.”
The video showcases a portion of the 1,000 individuals reunited with their sight after the surgery, displaying diverse emotional reactions. He generously gave monetary gifts, reaching up to $50,000 for some and even a Tesla car for another person. In a Monday tweet, MrBeast questioned the lack of action by governments in assisting those with treatable blindness. “I don’t understand why curable blindness is a thing,” he wrote.
“Why don’t governments step in and help? Even if you’re thinking purely from a financial standpoint it’s hard to see how they don’t roi on taxes from people being able to work again.” Levenson told CNN that his motivation to assist came after he underwent cataract correction surgery himself. “If MrBeast can light a fire, and if we can get governmental and private support behind it, we can end half of all the blindness in the world,” he said. “Without all that much cost, and with incredible gains in human productivity and human potential.”
