United Nations Projects The World Population to Reach 8 Billion People This Week – The United Nations projects that the world’s population will reach eight billion this week and has put up a website countdown to commemorate the occasion. United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres said in a statement posted on the organization’s website, “The milestone is an occasion to celebrate diversity and advancements while considering humanity’s shared responsibility for the planet.”
The United Nations attributed the unprecedented growth of the world’s population to an increase in the human lifespan as a result of advances in healthcare, medicine, and nutrition, as well as high fertility rates in some countries. India is expected to surpass China as the most populous country in 2023, according to the agency. According to the projections, eight countries would lead global population growth through 2050: the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Egypt, Ethiopia, India, Nigeria, Pakistan, the Philippines, and the United Republic of Tanzania.
It was also highlighted that population growth is more concentrated in certain of the world’s poorer countries, such as sub-Saharan Africa, and that countries with a higher average per capita income may not necessarily have a quickly expanding population. According to Liu Zhenmin, UN Under-Secretary-General for Economic and Social Affairs, the relationship between population increase and sustainable development is complex and multilayered. Rapid population expansion makes it more difficult to eradicate poverty, eliminate hunger and malnutrition, and expand access to health and education systems.
The agency estimates that it will take until 2037 for the population to reach nine billion, despite the fact that it took 12 years to reach eight billion from seven billion. It was stated that the global population growth rate went under 1 percent in 2020 and is currently “growing at the slowest rate since 1950.” The Covid-19 pandemic also played a part in affecting life expectancy throughout the world, bringing down the average life expectancy from 72.8 years in 2019 down to 71 in 2021.
