Michael Fishman not returning for season 5 of ‘The Conners’ – When The Conners returns to television for Season 5 this fall, it will be without one member due to the departure of original star Michael Fishman. The announcement comes as season 5 is slated to premiere Wednesday, Sept. 21.
The actor who portrays D.J. Conner, the younger brother of Darlene (Sara Gilbert) and Becky (Lecy Goranson), as well as the on-screen son of Dan (John Goodman) and Roseanne Conner (Roseanne Barr), is reportedly not going to be a part of Season 5. Fishman’s on-screen daughter Mary, played by Jayden Rey, won’t have a smaller part going forward despite the actor’s changed standing on the show.

The young actress is still slated to have a role in the program as a series regular, filling in for Fishman when necessary. The door has allegedly been left open for the actor’s return even after his departure should he decide to do so in conceivably future seasons.
Viewers may not be overly surprised by Fishman’s departure because, in compared to his regular series co-stars, he has appeared in the least episodes of The Conners. Fishman took on a larger role behind the scenes, directing five episodes of the sitcom – The Conners in place of his onstage participation in the show’s first four seasons.
When Fishman took up the DJ role for Roseanne’s second episode of the original series in 1988, it was his television debut. The actor played DJ from 1988 to 1997 before returning to the role in 2018 when Roseanne made a brief comeback before becoming The Conners.
