NBA Extends Partnership With Meta to Bring Basketball Games to the Metaverse – The NBA has reached an agreement to make select games available in the metaverse by extending their partnership with Meta. They will utilize virtual reality technology to broadcast games on the Xtadium app, which is used for immersive sports experiences and can be accessed through the Meta Quest 2 headset. The league will feature 52 games on Meta’s main metaverse app, Horizon Worlds, which users can watch and experience.
Five of these games will be presented in an immersive 180-degree monoscopic format, allowing users to feel like they are sitting courtside, changing the point of view as the match advances. The league’s goal with this move is to enhance the experience for current fans by incorporating interactive technology and attract new fans who are accustomed to these technologies to the sport.

About this, Meta director of metaverse media content Sarah Malkin stated: “VR’s superpower is making it possible to immerse yourself in shared experiences with friends and fans from around the world, and we’re thrilled to bring these killer features to the NBA Arena and live games.” Fans will have the chance to purchase NBA-licensed clothing in Meta’s Avatars Store, available on all of Meta’s apps such as Whatsapp, Instagram, and Facebook.
Rob Shaw, Director of Sports Media and League Partnerships at Meta, emphasized the value of introducing new technologies to fans. He explained: “Meta’s immersive VR technology is opening up new opportunities for sports fans to engage and interact with their favorite NBA teams. Fans will be able to express their fandom by donning their favorite team’s gear on Avatars and enjoy more live NBA games.”
The NBA is at the forefront of embracing new technologies to take its activities to the next level. By teaming up with Dapper Labs, the NBA launched NBA Top Shots in 2020, an NFT video marketplace that showcases the most iconic moments in the league’s history.
And, in September, the NBA joined forces with Sorare, a fantasy game company, to create an NFT game that will revolutionize the way fans interact with the league. With this kind of innovative thinking, the NBA is positioning itself as a leader in sports technology.
