Biden Administration Authorizes $725 Million in Additional Security Assistance for Ukraine – As Ukraine recovers from recent Russian missile attacks on civilian targets, the Biden administration approved an additional $725 million in security assistance on Friday. Secretary of State Antony Blinken stated in a statement on Friday that the Presidential Drawdown includes “munitions, arms, and equipment from US Department of Defense inventories.”
According to Blinken, the increased assistance takes the entire amount of US military aid provided to Ukraine since January 2021 to more than $18 billion. According to a press release from the Department of Defense, the support includes ammunition for High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems (HIMARS) and small arms as well as High Speed Anti-Radiation Missiles (HARMs), anti-tank weapons, and small arms.

Along with medical supplies, more than 200 high mobility vehicles, hundreds of artillery rounds, and rounds for Remote Anti-Armor Mine (RAAM) systems, the aid package also includes these items. Blinken stated, “We will continue to stand with the people of Ukraine as they defend their freedom and independence with extraordinary courage and boundless determination,” Blinken said. “The capabilities we are delivering are carefully calibrated to make the most difference on the battlefield for Ukraine.”

Following the NATO defense ministerial meeting on Thursday, US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin stated that other countries had pledged to support Ukraine. Austin stated that Spain will give Ukraine more “Hawk systems” for air defense, while a statement from the Defense Department stated that Germany had just sent Ukraine its first of four IRIS-T air defense systems.
