Donald Trump Officially Announces He Will Run for President in 2024 – Trump, the twice-impeached president who lost reelection in 2020, announced his candidacy on Tuesday night after months of teasing. Trump declared his candidacy on Tuesday night at the Mar-a-Lago Club in Palm Beach, Florida, after nearly two years of hints that he would seek a second term in the White House. Before stating his intentions for the country, the former president stated, “America’s comeback starts right now.” “We are here tonight to declare that it does not have to be this way.”
Later in his speech, he declared, “In order to make America great and glorious again I am tonight announcing my candidacy for president of the United States.” Trump’s decision comes amid investigations into his activities on January 6, 2021, when protesters invaded the U.S. Capitol on his behalf to prevent Joe Biden’s election victory from being certified, and his handling of confidential data after leaving office.
With multiple criminal and civil investigations ongoing, analysts and insiders believed that the twice-impeached public figure would increase discussion of a third presidential run in an effort to divert Americans’ attention. However, they were divided as to whether he would truly follow through.

“He fears losing in 2024. He hates being known as a loser,” former national security advisor John Bolton previously told CBS News. “He’ll talk about it incessantly — he may even announce he’s running — but when it comes down to it he won’t run.” Trump was the first president in modern history not to personally welcome his successor to the White House by attending the inaugural ceremonies.
He left office in January 2021 after serving for one term. Instead, he flew to his own club in Florida during Biden’s inauguration. Since leaving office, the former president has remained active in politics, campaigning alongside numerous controversial Republican candidates this year.
Republicans’ weak performance on November 8 — and voters’ evident reluctance to support Trump-backed candidates — prompted members of his own party to recommend he stay out the 2024 election, or at least wait to make a decision until after Georgia’s Senate runoff contest was declared.
“The Republican Party is still Donald Trump’s party, and it’s too late now for GOP leaders to throw him overboard,” Dave Aronberg, state attorney for Palm Beach County, tells news outlets. “Most of his supporters are loyal to him, not the Republican Party, so if Trump is not the nominee in 2024, he will direct his base to sit home or go elsewhere. And they will.”
