Dr. Luke’s Defamation Trial Against Kesha Postponed to Next summer – Dr. Luke’s defamation lawsuit against pop star Kesha has been rescheduled for next summer, nearly nine years after it was filed. During a videotaped court hearing on Friday, Manhattan Supreme Court Justice Jennifer Schecter stated that the trial would begin on either June 26 or July 17.
Before finalizing the date, the judge instructed the lawyers to consult with their clients, neither of whom were present at the hearing. Dr. Luke, real name Lukasz Gottwald, filed a defamation suit against the “Tik Tok” singer in October 2014, claiming she defamed him by accusing him of drugging and raping her. Since then, the two have been engrossed in a lengthy legal battle.
The trial was initially scheduled for October 2021, but it was rescheduled for February 20, 2023, due to various rulings and appeals. Kesha’s case currently has two appeals pending. The singer, whose full name is Kesha Rose Sebert, 35, also accused Luke, 49, of raping Katy Perry, which Perry denied in a deposition. Schecter previously ruled that Kesha should be held liable for defamation as a result of the Perry accusations.
A court later dismissed Kesha’s sexual abuse claims due to time constraints and other legal issues, without deciding whether the allegations were credible. Kesha rose to fame in 2009 with her single “TiK ToK.” At the height of the #MeToo movement against sexual misconduct, her performance of “Praying” became an emotional highlight of the Grammy Awards in 2018.
Dr. Luke, born Lukasz Gottwald, has worked with Katy Perry, Miley Cyrus, Kelly Clarkson, and Nicki Minaj, among others. His career suffered after Kesha publicly aired her allegations and received backing from several other female celebrities. However, he reappeared in 2020 as Tyson Trax, producing and co-writing “Say So,” Doja Cat’s Billboard Hot 100 No. 1 hit.
