Japanese Gaming Giant Sega to Launch First Blockchain Game – Sega, one of the most influential gaming companies in Japan, has declared that it will develop its first blockchain-based game. The project, which will be developed by another gaming company, Double Jump Tokyo, will be based on the Japanese arcade game franchise Sangokushi Taisen.
The Sangokushi Taisen franchise consists of a series of strategy games in which players utilize virtual cards on a virtual playing field. The game’s design lends itself to the incorporation of blockchain features, such as the tokenization of some of the game’s assets and the trading aspect of the cards. However, none of the companies have disclosed how these blockchain elements will be integrated into the game.

The game’s tentative release date has not yet been announced, and Sega has not announced the development of any similar project. Double Jump Tokyo also announced that Oasys, a Japanese gaming project, will be the vehicle for the blockchain component of the game. Oasys is a blockchain initiative that aims to be sufficiently scalable to support a large number of concurrent users. The company intends to enter the AAA gaming circle with this and other forthcoming releases.
Bandai Namco, Sega, Jump Crypto, and even Square Enix, which has become a validator of the chain and is currently exploring the launch of blockchain-based games utilizing this technology, are among the traditional entertainment behemoths and crypto companies that support Oasys.
The position of Sega regarding non-fungible tokens (NFTs) and blockchain games has been unclear. The company stated in January that it may abandon the implementation of these technologies in its games if customers view them as a money grab. However, more recently, in April, Sega hinted that NFTs and metaverse elements could be incorporated into its “Super Game” development strategy.
Other AAA gaming companies, such as Ubisoft, have been more clear by launching their own NFT markets and incorporating NFT elements from leading franchise games. Square Enix has also incorporated blockchain technology into its long-term business strategy.
