Liz Truss Resigns As UK Prime Minister – On Thursday, Liz Truss, the prime minister of the United Kingdom, announced her resignation after receiving repeated requests from members of her party to do so. Liz Truss announced her resignation in a statement outside Downing Street, stating that she had notified King Charles of her decision to step down since she was unable to carry out the duties for which she had been chosen.
“We set out a vision for a low tax, high growth economy that would take advantage of the freedoms of Brexit. I recognise though, given the situation, I cannot deliver the mandate on which I was elected by the Conservative Party. I have therefore spoken to His Majesty the King to notify him that I am resigning as leader of the Conservative Party,” she said.
Liz Truss will serve as Prime Minister until a new Conservative Party leader is chosen. She said that a party leadership election will be held within a week to “ensure that we remain on a path to deliver our fiscal plans and maintain our country’s economic stability and national security.”
After Boris Johnson resigned from the Conservative Party on July 7, Truss defeated Rishi Sunak to take over as its leader. Along with Hunt, another candidate for the position of leader Penny Mordaunt, Defense Minister Ben Wallace, and former Prime Minister Boris Johnson, Sunak is currently one of the favorites to succeed Truss.
The Conservatives’ anticipated budget update for October 31 is now uncertain as a result of the resignation, but Truss promised that the leadership transition would “ensure we remain on a path to deliver our fiscal plans.”
