Maxwell Alejandro Frost Elected as First Gen Z Member of Congress – Maxwell Alejandro Frost, a candidate for the Florida House, made history on Tuesday by becoming the first member from Generation Z to be elected to Congress. Early projections by the Associated Press indicate that Frost easily won Florida District 10, which includes Orlando, with about 59% of the vote to Republican Calvin Wimbish’s 40%.
After the results of his race were announced, Frost remarked, “history was made,” writing: “We made history for Floridians, for Gen Z, and for everyone who believes we deserve a better future. I am beyond thankful for the opportunity to represent my home in the United States Congress.” After winning the Democratic Party’s nomination in a primary in August, 25-year-old activist and former Uber driver Frost was highly expected to win the general election.
In a speech in September, Frost argued that his advanced age was a political advantage rather than a hindrance. At the time, Frost stated, “What we’re finding more and more, our generation is gonna have the most jobs in a lifetime than other times in history,” Frost said at the time. “Members of Gen Z move around jobs a lot, we will own the least amount of assets and property, we carry the most personal debt.”
Frost ran for election on a platform of addressing issues impacting his fellow citizens, like gun violence and rising housing costs. “I don’t think young people on either political side are interested in different issues — we all want resources, opportunities, we want our friends and people we’ve never met before to enjoy their lives,” he stated. “We think about things like, How do we protect each other? How do we build a government that protects the most vulnerable?”
Another Gen Z candidate who garnered attention in the run-up to the midterm elections was Republican Karoline Leavitt, a 25-year-old former Trump White House aide who is running for the New Hampshire House. In the Republican primary in September, Leavitt defeated Matt Mowers, a more well-funded establishment Republican, and went on to win the nomination by adopting Trump’s political stance and being more outspoken about his support for the late president. She faces Democratic Rep. Chris Pappas in the general election, a race that could make her the youngest woman elected to Congress.
