Plane Makes Emergency Landing in Chicago After Passenger’s Laptop Catches Fire – Monday night, a Lufthansa flight made an emergency landing in Chicago due to a “small fire” caused by a passenger’s overheated laptop. Two flight attendants were treated for smoke inhalation. According to an airline statement, the pilots made the precautionary choice to land the aircraft at O’Hare International Airport after taking off from Los Angeles and en route to Frankfurt, Germany.
“The reason was a small fire onboard the cabin caused by a passenger’s overheated laptop,” the statement read. “The small fire was extinguished in flight before its safe landing. Safety on board was not compromised at any time.” The airline noted that the flight attendants were treated on-site for smoke inhalation and that there were no injured passengers on Flight 457. All passengers were rebooked on other flights.
The incident followed the emergency landing of a Spirit Airlines flight in Philadelphia on Friday, after pilots reported that the jet had been struck by lightning twice en route to Cancun. In November, smoke in the cabin forced an Atlanta-to-Los Angeles Delta flight to make an emergency landing. Eventually, Flight 2846 landed in Albuquerque, New Mexico, when smoke filled the cabin. Pilots later reported a difficulty with the functioning of one of the aircraft’s two engines, but it was unclear at the time whether the issue was related to the smoke.
