Rishi Sunak Has Won The Race To Become The First British Asian Prime Minister – Following Liz Truss’ resignation merely 44 days into her office, Sunak, 42, will be the latest leader of the governing Conservative Party to walk through No. 10 Downing Street. More than 100 Conservative Party lawmakers gave Sunak their support, solidifying his position as the party’s and ultimately the country’s leader. The former head of the British Treasury will become the country’s first British Asian prime minister.
In order to obtain the required number of supporters by the deadline of 2 p.m. on Monday, his rival Penny Mordaunt decided to withdraw from the race, and Boris Johnson withdrew on Sunday night. Prime ministers in the United Kingdom are not directly elected in a general election. Usually, they are the party leaders with the most parliamentary representation. The Conservative Party started the process of choosing a new leader when Truss resigned last week as its leader and, consequently, as prime minister.
Because the party has a majority in parliament, this process also included choosing a new prime minister. Sunak’s appointment by his party secures his impending tenure as prime minister, but he won’t take office until Truss formally tenders her resignation to King Charles III and the king formally requests Sunak to form a new government. That is anticipated to occur shortly, potentially as soon as Tuesday.
The economic expertise Sunak gained while serving as Johnson’s treasury secretary (known as the Chancellor of the Exchequer in Britain) will likely be hoped for by many Conservative members of parliament as well as many Brits in general. Sunak was a strong critic of the economic strategy centered on tax cuts implemented under Truss just a few weeks ago, which rocked global markets and damaged investor faith in the UK.
While the majority of that plan was swiftly abandoned by the current treasury chief, who Truss hired after removing the chancellor she had appointed, the confidence in Britain’s economic stability across the world has not yet returned. By January 2025, another general election is required by UK law. The next public vote must be scheduled by the government, which is still led by the same Conservative Party that has held office for more than ten years, and it may do so at any time before the deadline.
