Senate Republican Says Trump Should Drop Out of Presidential Race – On Sunday, Senator Bill Cassidy (R-La.) expressed his belief that former President Trump should withdraw from the 2024 presidential race. “I think so,” Cassidy said on CNN’s “State of the Union,” when asked whether Trump should drop out. “But obviously, that’s up to him. I mean, you’re just asking me my opinion, but he will lose to Joe Biden if you look at the current polls.”
“I’m a Republican. I think any Republican on that stage in Milwaukee will do a better job than Joe Biden. And so I want one of them to win,” Cassidy continued. “If former President Trump ends up getting the nomination, but cannot win a general, that means we’ll have four more years of policies, which I think have been deleterious to our country’s future.”

Cassidy, a Republican known for his bipartisan efforts and one of the seven GOP senators who voted for conviction in the second Trump impeachment trial, stated that he doesn’t anticipate American voters to choose a convicted felon. He additionally remarked that among the various charges Trump is facing, the case related to mishandling and hoarding of national security information appears to be quite straightforward.
“If that is proven, then we may have a candidate for president who has been convicted of a crime. I think Joe Biden needs to be replaced, but I don’t think Americans will vote for someone who’s been convicted. So I’m just very sorry about how all of this is playing out,” In the 2024 presidential race, Trump currently holds a significant lead as the prominent candidate for the GOP.
Whereas, his legal challenges appear to have had minimal influence on his backing from Republican voters up to this point. Looking ahead, the inaugural GOP presidential primary debate is scheduled for Wednesday in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. However, Trump has communicated his intention to abstain from participating in this debate. He cites his strong polling figures and a particular requirement for candidates to commit to supporting the eventual nominee, a commitment he has indicated he won’t make.
