San Jose Football Player Dead After He Was Struck by School Bus While Riding Scooter – Camdan McWright, a freshman football player at San Jose State University, died early on Friday when a school bus hit his scooter. He was 18. The freshman running back was reportedly two blocks from campus when he was struck by the bus while he was riding his scooter, according to the California Highway Patrol report.
“We lost an amazing young man tragically this morning,” SJSU football head coach Brent Brennan says in a statement. “Camdan had a bright future ahead of him and everyone in this community that had the opportunity to spend time with him knew that.”
“We are still trying to deal with the news of this tragedy, and appreciate everyone’s support during these difficult times. Our thoughts and prayers are with the McWright family and I want them to know we are all here for them. Camdan will always be in our hearts and he will be profoundly missed,” Brennan adds.
There were 14 children on the bus, ages 14 to 17, and none of them were injured in the collision. Although it is not suspected that drugs or alcohol contributed to this collision, the investigation is still ongoing, according to CHP. In Panorama City, California, McWright participated in football for St. Genevieve High, serving as captain his junior and senior years. He was also named to the first team of the Camino Real League and won the league’s Most Valuable Player award twice.
The team’s scheduled game against New Mexico State on Saturday is still pending, according to SJSU. McWright’s loss is painful and devastating for the San José State community, according to SJSU President Steve Perez, who also paid respect to McWright in a statement.
“We grieve for Camdan, his family, friends, teammates, and the Spartan family,” Perez added. “We grieve together and will provide all of the support that Camdan’s family, our students and our football program require to help move through this tragic time.”
