WhatsApp Working on Implementing AI-Powered Image Editing Tools – WhatsApp is reportedly developing generative AI image-editing capabilities, as disclosed by the leaker known as AssembleDebug on TheSpAndroid. These features would enable users to incorporate text-to-image backdrops, restyle images, and expand backgrounds within the messaging app.
Although Meta introduced generative AI features for Instagram and Facebook last year, WhatsApp’s inclusion of such tools was not previously revealed. The leaked information suggests that these upcoming features were accessed through WhatsApp’s 2.24.7.13 beta version. The proposed “backdrop” feature might transform prompts into background images, resembling a functionality offered by Adobe Firefly.

Similarly, AI-based background expansion is not novel, with Canva and Adobe Photoshop already providing similar capabilities. Allegedly, WhatsApp’s new AI tools could be accessed through a sparkle icon, integrated into the existing upper button menu alongside other image-editing functions like rotation, cropping, and adding stickers and text.
Meta has refrained from commenting on the development of these tools. However, AssembleDebug mentions that he hasn’t managed to activate the new features yet, indicating that while there may be some user experience design implemented, the features themselves could still be undergoing final development stages.
When contacted for clarification, AssembleDebug informed a news outlet that he accessed the features using a “rooted” Android device, essentially a jailbroken smartphone, which enabled him to modify internal WhatsApp data and enable the visibility of these features. Although the leaker solely examined the new features on Android, there’s speculation that they are also being developed for iOS.

Assemble also revealed additional potential changes and features for WhatsApp on Friday, displaying screenshots hinting at opt-in voice message transcriptions, third-party chats, and a “people nearby” feature possibly being in progress. Previously, the leaker has divulged leaks of editing features purportedly under development for Google’s Messages app by scrutinizing code from a beta version, and has uncovered indications of a potential TikTok Photos app.
